Comparing share of wealth by region/countries

by Catherine Mulbrandon on February 10, 2008

Instead of income this graph focuses on personal net worth. I found the pie chart at Metrics 2.0, depicting the share of personal wealth by region in 2000.

Regional wealth share

Average wealth amounted to $144,000 per person in the USA in year 2000, and $181,000 in Japan. Lower down among countries with wealth data are India, with per capita assets of $1,100, and Indonesia with $1,400 per capita.

I am not impressed with you pie graph. A bar graph would better demonstrated this data because the actual data value i.e. average personal wealth is hidden in a percentile. I would have a much more accurate idea of these numbers if they were compared in dollars.

The average reader might not pick up on this and assume that we hold 34% of the world’s wealth which is extremely misleading.

That’s okay, Tracey, because I’m not impressed with “you” writing.
