Federal Taxes paid/received for each State

Day 16 of 28 Days of  Tax Data

Found at Visual Economics, via ChartPorn and Context.org

Two map one for tax dollars going from individual states to the Federal Government (dark red), the second for tax dollars going from the Federal Government to the states (blue). A third map would be nice showing the ratio between money in verses money out.

It’s not clear what they’re trying to show. The colors indicate total payments but the highlighted states show per-capita payments. And then at the bottom there’s a sorted list of states with ratios. It’d make more sense to color based on per-capita or the ratios.

  • Daniel Williams

What’s important are the ratios on the bottom, because they tell how much a state gets back in federal spending per dollar given to the federal government. To keep it simple, 2 states break even and pay for themselves (Rhode Island and Georgia), while 17 others (New Jersey – Oregon on the ratios list) pay for the other 31 states including the District of Columbia (Which even though it pays the most in federal taxes it receives over FIVE times what it puts in). My only thing is, I’d be careful with this, all of the data on TaxFoundation.org stops at 2005, and there’s no mention of which year this data represents.

I LOVE HOW ALL THESE SUPPOSED RED STATES ARE BEING CARRRIED FINACIALLY BY THESE SUPPOSEDLY COMMUNIST BLUE STATES.

  • Declan Carney

These are stats that the federal government should mandated to publish annually

Wow, you libtards are still using this same old graph from 2005….. LOL, you guys are desperate

Uh… Do you think things have changed significantly since then in regards to federal spending/taxes? How about explaining why red states get so much more money back than they spend? It seems like Republicans are the real welfare queens.

This is a very interesting chart. Sort of underscores that average American taxpayers are underwriting the existence of Washington, D.C. in more ways than we know.

Please normalize the data to truly compare the states. Individual ratios don’t say much in terms of what states are paying HUGE amounts to sustain the rest. I wish electoral college was weighed by that ratio.

If you did any homework you would find out how much untaxable property the Feds occupy in DC as well as the enormous costs our police spend on demonstrations, helping the Secret Service, etc. We are the last colony.

Its important to identify the sources of these money flows. For instance, the Federal government has appropriated large amounts of land, which generates income from mineral rights leases. Its only fair that this money goes back to the state.

I want proof that there is an apples to apples comparison being made.

The United States is not an oligarchy of the richest. It is a balance of equal individual votes regardless of economic status, and the sovereignity of the individual states (hence equal representation in the Senate, and population weighted in the House)

  • Bladec111

It’s not rocket science…The southern states are welfare states who live off of the east and west coasts…They elect representatives that insist on a “balanced budget”…fine…I have a solution…No state gets back more than 88% of their federal tax contribution…California, the “Bastion of Evil Liberalism” receives 78 cents on the dollar…The great State of Alabama, which we all know has made so many contributions to our society receives 66 cents more on each dollar paid in federal taxes…Believe me, not only the budget but the deficit could be dealt with in short order if only each state received about 88 cents on the dollar of each dollar in federal tax….The pigs in the south would never allow this though as they are what they always have been…useless welfare rascists who have never taken responsiblility for their past or their future…Again, they live off of the right and left coasts and then have the audacity to demand more…Governor Perry was right…let the miserable basterds go their own way…In a year they would all be eating tree bark and rats and then each other…Fuck the south, fuck Texas, and fuck the old confederacy…Let the red states leave the Union…The country and the world would be a better place…One other element though…build fences to keep these low life traitors out of the blue states.

These maps are deceptive. The real question is how much money out every citizens dollar ends back up in the governments hands(State and Federal- all inclusive). We all know that the books are cooked. One state pays x amount and receives x amount back. This is a simple smoke screen and the questions remain the same. Uncle Sam steals from Mary to pay Paul. As usual “Joe the plumber” takes it down the throat and up the back side. The info that is available basically shows that 80-90 cents of every dollar ends up in the government’s hands. Think about it. We pay federal income tax,(state where applicable) as well as sales tax, energy tax and sin tax. This doesn’t include property tax, marriage tax and every other made up tax they can think of. It seems that they want all of our money and we should feel good that we actually retain 10 cents out of every dollar. Heck next year we will only retain 5 cents out of every dollar. This philosophy isn’t working.

Deal Bladec111, Funny that you mention the welfare “racists” of the south. Have you given any thought to the devil in the details why this number is so skewed. These states have some of the largest African American groups and if you separated out the numbers on where groups actually consume these federal dollars or even at the state level VS the contribution to taxes and your assertion of a welfare racists won’t hold water. In particular you may want to pay attention to the numbers from Louisiana. Similar arguments are made when immigration is discussed. The “average” income and contribution is not that bad. The “average” SAT scores of students from immigrant families are pretty decent. Then this argument is used to even support illegal immigrants. If you actually broke it down into various groups it is highly divergent. Particularly between those from south of the border and the rest of groups (even hispanics included) and then along hispanic VS non-hispanic groups. There is a reason why they say “lies, damned lies, and statistics”. FYI I am neither white nor african american.

Look closer, a state like Virginia, has a liberal democrat high population area like DC (number one for getting federal money–of course, everyone who lives there works for the government) AND the downstate folks who live in Norfolk and the like, are largely active or retired military members.  So smarty pants, look into the statistics a little closer.

Dear Greg. states like virginia and texas have very large military populations (on the federal payroll) and Florida also has a huge population of retirees in addition to navy and air force bases. Look beyond the superficial numbers.

Hmm..  but northern Virginia is full of military and security contractors that take federal dollars and lobby for war spending that benefits the current and former military personnel downstate.

    Methinks Greg got it right.
